"counting" our blessings...

Something about this phrase, "counting" our blessings. This concept of ticking off, having an account, a numerical proof of our worth - why we have to view our level of satisfaction with ourselves in numbers bothers me.

Okay, so just about everything we consider consciously has a number attached to it. But isn't this exactly why we suddenly find ourselves miserable or overburdened with heavy baggage?! We count in order to acquire.

Perhaps this is why ethical questions too escape any lasting consensus. The value of the "good deed" I insist is immeasurable, and the suffering of others must not be weighed by any means. Do we count the tears? I hope not. But we must not tally the smiles or hands extended either.
